The Procter & Gamble company is recall of several brands aerosol dry shampoos and conditioners due to the presence of carcinogenic benzene, including Pantene, Aussie, Herbal Essences and Waterless, as well as previously discontinued aerosol dry shampoos from Old Spice and Hair Food.
The recalled products were distributed across the United States at retail and online outlets.
The reminder, published on December 17, 2021, states: “Benzene is classified as a human carcinogen. Exposure to benzene can occur by inhalation, orally and through the skin and can lead to cancers including leukemia and blood marrow and blood cancer Based on exposure modeling and cancer risk assessments published by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) (IRIS database), daily exposure to benzene in recalled products at the levels detected in our testing would not be expected to result in adverse health consequences. Benzene is ubiquitous in the environment. Humans around the world are exposed to it daily indoors and outdoors from multiple sources. To date, The Procter & Gamble Company has received no reports of adverse events related to this recall and is proceeding with this recall out of an abundance of caution.”
